Safe Start Demonstration Sites
Chatham Co. Safe Start Lead Agency: Chatham County Partnership for Children Safe Start Staff:
Project Purpose: Chatham County, a large rural county, is simultaneously sustaining a
massive influx of Hispanic workers, a large proportion of households living
below poverty, and rapid suburban growth that diverts tax dollars away
from social programs. This turmoil often results in violence, much of
which affects children. The chief problem we will address is that the
system of services to prevent and respond to the impact of violence on
children is narrow, unfocused, and fragmented. Under the current system,
if a child is not directly involved when an adult commits violence, no
formal protocol is in place to systematically identify that child. The
community is not trained in recognizing a child suffering from exposure
to violence, or in identification of violence risk factors. Children ages
0-8 are the target population. Project Goals:
