Buying Guide

Most parents choose cribs by style, size, and price. However, you need to consider more factors to select the best baby cribs. Here are a few things to keep in mind as you shop:

  • All cribs manufactured after 2011 must meet the standards set forth by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission. Don't buy a used crib because cribs adhere to extremely high (and constantly evolving) safety standards. They also tend to weaken over time, especially after being continuously used by older children. Hence, the only way to ensure structural integrity is to purchase a new one.

  • Always check for any recalls related to your crib. Discontinue using it immediately if you encounter any problem and contact the crib manufacturer for monitoring.

  • Inspect all crib components before and after assembly to ensure everything is intact, stable, and in good working condition. Make sure there are no broken or cracked bars, loose parts, etc. Measure the distance between the bars of your crib; if they are more than 2 3/8 inches apart (about the width of a soft drink can), the crib will not be safe to use. If you're not confident to build your crib, contact the manufacturer or retailer, as many offer pre-shipment assembly. It will cost you a bit more, but it might be worth it.

  • Make sure the crib you choose has at least some adjustable mattress settings that allow you to lower and raise the mattress. When your baby is an infant, the higher position setting will enable you to reach your baby without having to bend over easily. As they grow and begin to sit and stand, you should lower the mattress so the kids can't climb out.

  • Make sure the mattress is a good and snug fit. According to Consumer Report, mattresses used in full-size cribs must be at least 24 1/4 inches wide, 51 5/8 inches long, and no more than 6 inches thick. It doesn't have a snug enough fit if you can fit more than two fingers between the mattress and the crib frame.
