Buying Guide

Balance bikes come in a variety of sizes for kids from 18 months to 5 years old and budgets (from $50 to over $200). Higher-end models have more features, top-of-the-line components, and better maneuverability.

You should choose one with an adjustable seat that can grow with your child and last several years. In most cases, a toddler will learn to ride balance bikes at 2 or 3 years of age and switch to pedal bikes when they turn 4 or 5 years old.

Things to keep in mind when choosing a balance bike:

  • Ensure that there's plenty of space between the saddle and the handlebars so that the child's legs don't scrunch up when moving.

  • Your child's feet should be able to easily reach and push off the ground to prevent the risk of falling and hurting.

  • The saddle should be low and close to the rear tire to make it easier for kids to balance. If it is too high, your child may lose the center of gravity.

  • Some balance bikes have handbrakes that preschoolers can be coordinated enough to use, but most children rely solely on their feet to stop.

  • Handlebars must have rubber handles and bumpers to protect your child's hands if they hit something or fall.

  • With the smaller balance bike, the tire size should be 12".

  • The heavier the bicycle is, the harder it is for small children to maneuver. The bike shouldn't weigh more than 30% of your child's weight.
