Types of Breast Pumps

When learning about breast pumps, you should know two terms: closed-system pumps and open-system pumps.

  • Closed-system pumps: also known as hospital-grade breast pumps, separate milk by a barrier (this feature is also known as "overflow protection"). Closed-system is the most hygienic type of pump because a diaphragm prevents milk from entering the machine. However, they tend to be expensive.

  • Open-system pumps: This type of pump has no barrier between the milk and the pump mechanism, so milk flows through the tubes and other small debris into the tank and thus can come into contact with the pump mechanism. Although they may be less hygienic, open-system pumps are generally less expensive than closed-system ones.

Buying Guide

When buying the best breast pumps, you'll want to find the one that meets your specific needs – the one that's right for a mom may not be the right choice for you. Consider these critical factors:

  • Pumping frequency: Think about how often you will pump. If you're going to pump at least a few times a week, then a manual pump won't make much sense as you'll have to spend a lot of time and energy using it. In that case, it's probably worth investing in a single or double electric pump.

  • Your lifestyle: Some new models allow you to pump completely hands-free without any obvious pipes or wires. Some hands-free products can even be worn under your clothes!

  • Loudness: While no breast pump is completely silent, some pumps are louder than others. If you're keeping an eye on other people, either in the office or on conference calls, you may want to choose a relatively quiet product.

  • Weight: If you are going to the office or traveling often, having a lightweight pump will be very helpful. You can also buy a breast pump bag to carry it.

  • Where you will pump: Do you have access to an electrical outlet? Otherwise, you may want to consider a dual-electric model that comes with a battery pack. Another option is a small portable battery-powered option, even if it's not quite as powerful.

  • Replacement parts: Parts such as hoses and duck valves need to be replaced regularly. If you must pump frequently, you should choose a pump compatible with widely available replacement parts. And if you have multiple pumps - one for work and one at home - it may be more convenient to buy two from the same brand since that means parts (like bottles and flanges) will be compatible with each other.
